112 days before the Super Bowl, not as hot as you thought

Super Bowl = 112, SB winners always seem to win 112 days before the Super Bowl

I went on another blog to promote this blog, hey sorry, but I think
I'm doing some pretty solid, clear, clean, and excellent work, and anyway,
I found a discussion of the idea that the Super Bowl winners always seem
to win 112 days before the Super Bowl, and that this was relevant
because "Super Bowl" = 112...

...Well I quickly realized that 112 days is evenly divisible by 7.

In other words, 112 days before the Super Bowl, every single year,
there is a FULL SUNDAY of NFL games...

...therefore, every single year, AT LEAST 26 teams out of 32 (modern times)
will be playing....

...and so at least 13 teams will win 112 days before the SB, every year.

You see what I mean here? The vast majority of the league
is playing 112 days before the SB, and half of that majority
will win 112 days before the SB.

BUT still, IF we found that EVERY SINGLE YEAR, the SB winner
wins on the Sunday that is 112 days before the SB, well that would
narrow the field of possible SB teams down pretty good....

I went back to Super Bowl 1, and here's what I found.
(raw data posted at end).

WINS 112 days before the SB
Out of 52 Super Bowls, the SB winner has won on the Sunday
that is 112 days before the SB:

38 times.

38 out of 52. About 73% of the time.

Now, 4 of those times it was 111 days plus the end date to get 112.

So just straight, w/o counting the end date it was only

34 times. Or 65% of the time.

And that would mean 4 times on the 111 day + end date,
or 7% of the time.

LOSES 112 days before the SB
Out of 52 Super Bowls, the SB winner has lost on the Sunday
that is 112 days before the SB:

8 times.

8 out of 52. About 15% of the time.

DOESN'T PLAY 112 days before the SB
Out of 52 Super Bowls, the SB winner did not even play on the Sunday
that is 112 days before the SB:

5 times.

5 out of 52. About 9% of the time.

((9 if we count those 111 days + end date ones, or 17% of the time))

TIES 112 days before the SB
Out of 52 Super Bowls, the SB winner tied on the Sunday
that is 112 days before the SB:

1 time.

1 out of 52. About 2% of the time.

((the tie was SB09. score: 35-35))

bye week
The times the SB winner was on their BYE week
on the Sunday that is 112 days before the SB:

SB25, SB41, SB43...

The other two times the SB winner did not play, one was
because of a strike: SB17, and the other was a year ago, SB52,
when Philadelphia played on the Thursday of that week.

longest streak
There was quite a streak there at one point...

SB26 to SB39 every winner played on the 112 days Sunday.

14 years in a row.

current streak
If you want to count the SB52 winner, even though they didn't play
111 or 112 days before SB52, but because they played on 10/12 (112)

then the current streak is 7 in a row...

SB46 to SB52...

But if you don't count SB52 with the 10/12 date manipulating,
then there was a streak of 6 in a row...

SB46 to SB51...

...that was snapped with SB52.

conclusion
So, considering that it is always a full Sunday of games,
and that there are plenty of examples where the SB winner
lost or didn't even play, I don't really think this can be used
as an eliminator or a confident tool to narrow the candidates.

BUT 73% is 73%...

week 6 this season
So let's check who wins on week 6 this year, and
it's about a 73% chance that one of those 12-14 teams or so
will wind up winning the SB...

The fact that the one tie was SB09, and the score was 35-35,
and that this is a 9 heavy year ('18 season, 99th NFL season,
starting on 9/9, etc...) and that it is SB53 (53 / 35...), I would
be very intrigued if any teams tie in week 6...

Lions and Saints are on BYE for week 6 this year.
Eagles and Giants play on Thursday and so are not viable for
the 111 or 112 days, and the date is not 10/12...

So 14 games are on the 111 or 112 days, and that's 28 teams...

barring any ties, we'd be down to 14 teams, 13 on the straight 112...

Since more modern times, when they play later in the year and
the 112 days mark comes in week 5 or 6...

...only 2 times did the SB winner not improve to a winning record
on the 112 days Sunday...

SB36 New England won and only improved to 2-3...
SB45 Green Bay won and only improved to 3-3...

So that could narrow those 14 teams down further...
See who wins on week 6, and improves/stays on a winning record.

And then if you want to consider the week 6 losers,
but narrow them down, only once has the SB winner lost
on the 112 days Sunday, and fell to a losing record:

SB15, Oakland lost and fell to 2-3.

So any week 6 losers that are on a losing record are probably
definitely out.

And any week 6 winners that do not have a winning record
are probably out...

OH, one more thing... SB53 is prime so let's check this history with prime SBs.
Of all prime SBs the SB winner either DID NOT PLAY or WON on the 112 days Sunday
The one SB winner to lose,  it was on the 111 days + end date. That was SB05.

Well, here's the raw data, and cheers!

  1. Really great research there well done! Have you considered 131 days before as well? Since Superbowl = 131

    1. Hey Lenny C thanks. As for 131, nah, because 131 days before the Super Bowl is always a Tuesday. (Wednesday if you count 130 + end date).

Interesting though, 131 days is 4 months and 9 days (49) and in reverse reduced "Super Bowl" = 49.

Maybe the SB winner always makes big news or cuts someone or something on that Tuesday, ha, I don't know.

      Okay, cheers!

    1. Thank you joshua tree. I'm sorry but I can't figure out what you mean about later games on 10/6. This season there are no games on 10/6. The late game on 10/7 is Cowboys Texans.

In SB history, 5 SB winners have WON on 10/6 (112 days before their SBs)... were they all the night/late games? or maybe 4 p.m. games as opposed to 1 p.m. games...

Even if so, what does that have to do with this year.

      Clarify/elaborate if you would please.

      Thanks again. Cheers!

    2. i'm wondering myself why i said 10/6. i probably meant the super bowl winner plays the afternoon games week 6. my bad.

    3. joshua tree, ah, so of all the times the SB winner has played on the 112 days Sunday, they have played the late games (4 p.m. Easter time)... but only when the 112 days Sunday has been week 6? And only when they have WON on the 112 days Sunday?... Or are you saying every single time, win or lose, but every single time the SB winner has played on the 112 days Sunday they have played the 4 p.m. games? THAT would eliminate it down even further... But I'm too lazy to check right now.

but anyway, no probs, and thanks so much for the comments!

    1. Thank you very much. Want to do even more on this- like look at the SB LOSER, and what THEY tend to do on the 112 days Sunday... and definitely check into this whole late games (4p.m.) angle...

      well thanks again! cheers!

  4. So does this mean lions will not be in Super Bowl this year? Maybe next? Lol

    1. Hey thanks for the comment... The Lions and Saints are on BYE this year for WEEK SIX... However, teams on bye week on this 112 days before the SB Sunday, have won the SB three times... SB25, SB41, and SB43

so it's rare, but wouldn't be the first.

I do happen to have a hunch that next year, SB54 will be Lions and Colts but who knows!

    1. See my reply to your comment on my WEEK 5 UPDATE post if you haven't already. History disagrees that the SB will be from the 4pm slot this week... even though the "hot teams" are playing in that slot this year.

Plenty of legitimate contenders are playing in the 1pm slot... Chargers, Panthers, Redskins, Vikings, Steelers, Bengals, Bears... Anyone playing in the 1pm slot that WINS and has a winning record is, history says, most likely making/winning the SB.

And regardless of time slots, the teams playing on SUNDAY that WIN... the SB winner will come from one of them 73% of the time.

      Cheers!
